Meet Ted Strzelecki of Solar Wolf Energy

DOUGLAS — /BostonVoyager/ Today we’d like to introduce you to Ted Strzelecki.

Ted, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.

So growing up I knew I was different. As a child I would sell pens, candy, mixed tapes in school. I would get in trouble for this and my parents would smile. My folks had a business while I went to middle & high school and I liked not only watching people and how they reacted, but also how the extraordinary feeling of doing the right thing made me feel. Their business did okay, but never really exploded and to be honest, I think that taught me more about scaling and what not to do in business. They never really did any marketing and I saw even while young, the huge need for it. I cannot thank them both enough. I went to trade school for Carpentry and knew I wanted to be in construction. I fell in love with that and real estate. That path has brought me to my passions today which are still the very same two. I still work 18 hours a day, 6 days a week and most Sundays. I have had insomnia for over a decade now and I find it is a very good attribute as an entrepreneur. Between genuinely loving my work, and having a very understanding and supportive spouse I feel like I have a disproportionate advantage. I stay humbled by the passion and total commitment from the people in our organization. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to my amazing team at Solar Wolf Energy. Every one of our associates at SWE are inspirational to me.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?

Smooth road? Not at all! Some of our biggest struggles building SWE have been a former co-founder that ended up being less than honorable. Taking work away from the very company he started with me to benefit himself that obviously put a hurt on the company’s bottom line. My wife and I put up all the money to start this and as most know during a corporation’s infancy cash flow is hard to come by. (My wife and I are a one income family supporting a then family of 5). With a startup generally there is no income! Oddly enough the next two months after the split however, we did more in revenue than we had in the previous 9 months and it has grown double digits every quarter since. We have moved our company’s offices four times in the last two years due to growth. Another hardship we had starting out is we didn’t have a brand yet, no one knew us, there were no reviews, finance companies didn’t want to deal with me and so all this made it harder to get potential clients and customers to work with us. So, we all know the story from here, long hours falling asleep on the desk, several days without sleep, networking, the stress, not eating, (all the fun stuff no one talks about) and something we still do to this very day: Under promise and over deliver. Every. Single. Day.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Solar Wolf Energy – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.

Our company officially, is Solar Wolf Energy Inc. We are a full service solar company with installs all over the United States. Although we do commercial installs the vast majority is residential solar. I would have to say that our specialty and what we are known for is how clean and symmetrical our finished arrays look. We take a disproportionate amount of time prepping an install beginning all the way from the office, before the physical install happens. We also spend a few extra dollars using some added equipment to make sure you don’t see the conduits and electrical lines on the roof or outside the house. We also use exclusively monocrystalline modules. These are the black ones as opposed to the blue modules which are cheaper. This leaves our installs with a very sleek, monochromatic appeal that is super clean. I’d like to say this sets us apart as a company from the others in our industry, but more than this, it is the people that make our company that much better. We have such a self-contained cocoon at our company that most people once they join us they become affected by it and feel obligated to perform at a higher level. Winning and positivity is contagious. This, this is what I am most proud of as a CEO. Not the growth or branding. What makes me happiest is the ability to keep this atmosphere where everyone is laser focused and positive as we scale as rapid as we have.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?

So looking into the near future, I have just written a book on solar that will be published and available as late as August this year. A solid plan for us is obviously to focus on our progression as a company. This doesn’t necessarily mean adding more states as we already are functioning in 19 of them, but to become the very best at customer service pre, during, and post install for our clients in the ones we currently do serve. I have set up this company without bank financing and I have kept it so our margins are significantly lower than my competition. I look forward to the market correction that is inevitably incoming. I do so because there are too many companies in this industry that should never have made more than a few months. It’s the old adage of the “moth to the flame”. There are so many wantrepreneurs right now that I think it will be fun to be one of the last few standing in solar. This is a long term play for us. We are a privately held company and I want to grow this into one of the top solar providers while not going public. Something no one has successfully done yet. I think this “Wolf Pack” will be the group to get us there.
